On Friday 5 May 2017, over 300 art lovers and charity supporters gathered at The Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong for The 2017 Sovereign Asian Art Prize Gala Dinner and Auction.
The spectacular evening was filled with art, philanthropy, star-studded entertainment, fine wines, dancing and merriment! From 30 strong finalists, the Prize winners were announced, with 29 of the works being auctioned to raise money for both the artists and SAF’s charity projects across Asia.
Chinese artist Li Hongbo was announced as the winner of the Prize and was awarded a trophy and USD 30,000.
Li Hongbo impressed the judges with his artwork Desire, which is the first 3D work ever to be awarded the Prize. In Desire, an array of carved silhouettes – figures of little men – extend from the blade of a metal knife. Each figure runs in line, each following after the other, seemingly chasing for a mutual objective. Gary Mok Wai-hong, Hong Kong born artist, curator and long-time supporter of The Sovereign Asian Art Prize, nominated Li Hongbo into the Prize. An alumnus of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Gary is himself a former Sovereign Asian Art Prize finalist and has since 2009 has curated multiple high-profile exhibitions across Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau and Shanghai.
The public’s favourite artwork was also recognised when Yogie Achmad Gianjar of Indonesia clinched the popular vote with his artwork ABSORPTION 7. Yogie was presented with the Public Vote Prize trophy and USD 1,000.
Guests dined on a bespoke menu at the event, which was hosted by SAF’s very own Founder and Chairman, Howard Bilton. Hip-hop dance superstars and Grand Finalists of Asia’s Got Talent, Junior New System, gave two action-packed performances – the second of which closed the event with a bang and left everyone dancing well into the night!
Many thanks to our judges; Alexandra A. Seno, David Elliott, Jim Supangkat, Michael Snelling and Miao Xiaochun for lending their expertise to the 13th edition of the prize.
The Sovereign Art Foundation would also like to extend its gratitude to Pictet Wealth Management, auction partner Christie’s and auctioneer Francois Curiel, Langton’s East Asia for the spectacular wines, Hongkong Land, Ovolo Hotels, SUTTON, Aesop and La Maison Fontaine Absinthe.
