First Ever SAF Mauritius Students Prize a Success

An exhibition and award ceremony for the inaugural Sovereign Art Foundation Mauritius Students Prize was held on September 5, 2016, with the generous support of Circle Square Retail Park. Of 50 shortlisted artists from 11 schools, 12 impressive finalists were selected by the judges (artists Vaco Baissac, Nirveda Alleck and Nalini Treebhoobun). First prize was awarded to 18 year-old Sofiya Nikolskaya, a student at Northfields International High School, with her fantastic painting that was decidedly cubist-leaning. Second prize went to DAV College student Vaishnavi Gopaul, 16, with his work Landscape, while third prize was awarded to Natasha-Caleya Chetty, 15, a student of Friendship College, for her piece Seated Lady. Sovereign Special Prizes went to 17 year-old Tania Chalice of Lady Sushil Ramgoolam SSS, for her poignant work Destruction; and Adhin Sanesh, 18, of Adolphus College Plevitz SSS, whose brushstroke captured the image of a small colonial house beautifully. If one thing can be taken away from the first-ever Students Prize in Mauritius, it’s that the sheer amount of young artistic talent and ingenuity present on the island knows no bounds, and these incredible young artists will surely continue to develop their craft in the years to come! Congratulations to all involved.
