Gary Mok
Artist and Curator
Mok Wai Hong, Gary was born in Hong Kong in 1977. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing with a BA degree in 2007 and then was awarded a master’s degree in 2010. His works have been met with critical acclaim and he is one of the select few to have been nominated as a finalist for The Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2014. His work was also shown at New Art Wave in 2015.
As an artist, Mok knows a career in art is a difficult task. Since 2001, he has been actively involved in curating many important exhibitions and events to uplift fellow artists. In 2009, he curated the opening art exhibition “Endless” for Chow Sang Sang Beijing flagship store at Sanlitun. In 2010, he assisted young artist Chen Fei in developing art toy “Night Owl”, which then launched in 2012. This year, Mok was the curator of “Today & Tomorrow”, a thematic show for Art Macao 2013, to promote representative Macau artists on international platforms.
Mok has also been a nominator for The Sovereign Asian Art Prize from 2017 to 2020, focusing primarily in contemporary Chinese art. In 2016-17, four of his nominated artists were finalists and one of his nominees, Li Hong-bo, won the Grand Prize.
