The Sovereign Art Foundation has announced the names of the artists short-listed for its fifth annual Sovereign Asian Art Prize. Entry is by nomination by one of the Foundation's Asia-wide network of art experts or through an open entry. Open entries go through a preliminary judging process and the best join the nominated entries in the main judging round. This year the prize received over 1100 entries from around the Asia Pacific region.
This is the first year the prize has extended its conditions to accept work in all 2D media. The entries demonstrated the exciting and contemporary range of practices occurring within these mediums.
The thirty short listed artists and their works are attached.
The top thirty works will be exhibited in Singapore at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art (NAFA) from the 30th August to the 13th September. This is the first time the exhibition has toured to Singapore. Our thanks to NAFA for their support.
The exhibition will then travel to Hong Kong where it will be presented in the Landmark by Jaeger Le Coultre in conjunction with their 175th anniversary. The exhibition will run from the 21st to the 26th October.
During the exhibition the judges will decide on the ultimate winner of the US$25,000 prize. The winning artist will be announced by the Chairman of The Sovereign Group, Howard Bilton, at the gala auction on the 29th October at the Grand Hyatt. The evening is sure to be one of the high-lights of the social calendar not least due to the generous sponsorship by Barclays Wealth. During the evening the remaining 29 finalists will be auctioned and the proceeds split between the artists and the charitable foundation.
Public voting on the thirty short listed artists has now commenced on the Sovereign Art Foundation's website. Here visitors will decide the winner of the US$1,000 public vote prize that will be presented to the artist by Jean-Pierre Le Roux of Barclays Wealth on the night of the auction. The public will also be able to cast their critical votes during the exhibitions in Singapore and Hong Kong.
The Sovereign Art Foundation has also announced the shortlist for the 2008 Sovereign European Art Prize which can be viewed via the Foundation's website at http://www.SovereignArtFoundation.com.
