Mami Kataoka is Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. Prior to this position, Kataoka was Chief Curator at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (1997-2002) and Researcher at the NLI Research Institute on cultural policies and urban development projects (1992-1997). She was also international curator at the Hayward Gallery in London (2007-2009), Co-Artistic Director for the 9th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea (2012) and Artistic Director of the 21st Biennale of Sydney (2016-18). She serves as Board Member of CIMAM (2014-) and a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design Graduate School of Art and Design Studies, Global Seminar (2016-).
Her exhibitions at Mori includes a number of monographic survey shows for Asian mid-career artists including Ozawa Tsuyoshi (2004), Ai Weiwei (2009/ US Tour 2012-13), Lee Bul (2012), Aida Makoto (2012), Lee Mingwei (2014-15) and N.S.Harsha (2017). She also co-curated Roppongi Crossing in 2004 and 2013 which introduced contemporary art from Japan, and SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia from 1980s to Now (2017). Kataoka frequently writes and lectures on contemporary art from Japan, Asia and beyond.
