A Quiet Afternoon of Mindful Making with Inês Rochato

Portuguese Artist, Inês Rochato prompts our beneficiaries to reimagine themselves as a house, scroll to see their expressive artworks!

Last month, we spent a calm and reflective afternoon with artist Inês Rochato for a mindful making workshop. The prompt for the session was gentle but thought provoking. If you were a house, what would that look like? The workshop took place at Dona Ajuda on a quiet and rainy afternoon.

We began by spending a few minutes with the question and noting the shapes, colours and ideas that came to mind. This reflection helped everyone settle into a slower pace and prepare for the activity.

Working together around one table, participants then selected materials and started building their own interpretation of a “house”. We used mixed media such as papers, paints and drawing materials. Some created very literal house forms. Others explored the idea of “house” as a feeling or memory.

We all worked side by side as a small group. The focus was on mindful making, working quietly, noticing the process and giving time to each decision. There was space for conversation when needed, although much of the session was spent in shared concentration.

By the end of the afternoon the table held a range of works, each reflecting a different understanding of home. The process was steady and intentional, giving everyone room to explore their own approach.

We are grateful to Inês Rochato for guiding the session and to Dona Ajuda for hosting us.
