Ginny
School: Elizabeth College
Dimension: 59.4 x 84.1cm
Medium: Chalk, charcoal, gouache, ink, graphite

I wanted to create something which, from a far looks like a portrait drawing and when obvserving it closely it’s difficult to decipher what the strange marks of chalk and ink create

Grandpa Nick
School: Blanchelande College
Dimension: 55 x 79cm
Medium: Biro with tea stains

I enjoyed layering the biro to create depth and ended up with a 3D effect. I feel like I captured his personality in the picture. The gold background represents how he is a “Golden Oldie!”

Medium: Photography

This photograph demonstrates the entrapment of the post traumatic stress disorder where by we all live in fear of ones damaged inner mind from the effects of war. This Photo connotes the emotions women felt during World War Two, through the eerie, damp and neglected location choice of the German Military Underground Hospital. The uniform the female is wearing almost blends in with the neutral granite wall to emphasise the harsh reds and empowerment of the material to describe and represent the anger and frustration that women were unable to take place in the front line. This material looks as if it is grabbing and suffocating the female in the way that the traumatic stress disorder can dampen the minds ability to function. I wanted to recreate the situation to help the audience empathise with the severe psychological shock and mental disturbance faced by each member involved or suffered during the second World War.

The dreams that escaped my Head
School: Blanchelande College
Dimension: 84 x 59cm
Medium: Mixed media

This painting embodies and encaptures the spirit of nighttime. Shy and beautiful, overlooked woodland animals and creatures, and the most popular phrase used in fairytales ‘when the clock strikes midnight’. In this picture, I wanted a I wanted 1) a story to be taking place, and 2) movement that escapes off the page similar to a pop-up children’s storybook, filled with kitschiness and wonder. I was inspired by neo-traditional tattoos of delicate butterflies and flowers, Alice in Wonderland, traditional watercolour illustration and fine art photographer Kirsty Mitchell.

The Importance of St James’
School: The Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre
Dimension: 120 x 60cm
Medium: Oils on canvas

This piece is to portray the importance of a communal building in people’s lives. The A Level theme of ‘Supporting Structures’ allowed me to investigate the building structures in Guernsey and my love of portraiture into one. I think that the way her faced is defaced by the building shows the absolute necessity of the building as a means to support the person emotionally.

Through the Window
School: Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre
Dimension: 130 x 95cm
Medium: Oil on cardboard

I based my piece on a 1m 30cm by 95cm piece of cardboard as an authentic material as opposed to my usual work on canvas, having to use a layer of white emulsion before the oils. I believe my piece overall has a realistic style with a figurative hint of vivid colour and bold brush strokes. The hand of the figure depicted as if pressed against glass as well as the water droplets and reflections on the window, which slightly distort the figure, work together with the framing of the piece, which signifies a window frame.
