This Is Me! Family Workshop With Franka Struys

On Sunday the 20th of September we were delighted to welcome the incredible artist Franka Struys to lead a free workshop for children in Lisbon where they were able to explore ideas of how they saw themselves, their relationships with those around them and their relationship with the natural world. And were able to articulate those ideas through artistic expression at Dona Ajuda.

The afternoon began with an introduction to Franka and her work, and how she finds inspiration within the natural environment around her. Franka later explained to the children how she embraces the natural world in her works by incorporating elements of nature, as well as using pigments derived from minerals to create her own paints.

Participants were supplied with a range of materials, such as paints, coloured markers and glue. Franka also kindly provided an assortment of natural materials like shells, flowers, rocks and minerals, which, inspired by Franka, the participants put to excellent use!

The children were first instructed to lay on the ground whilst a friend or family member drew an outline of them, from there they were encouraged to fill the space that they occupied with how they saw themselves.

We were honoured to witness the ingenious ways that the participants utilised the tools they were equipped with, using the natural elements that Franka provided for both painting and some natural elements becoming part of the pieces themselves.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the afternoon, we were truly amazed at all of your work! A special thank you goes to Franka Struys for being such a fabulous host and donating her time to work with us, and to Dona Ajuda for allowing us use of the wonderful community space.
